The push button must carry 500 or more amps of current. If it was replaced with an identical IH switch or quality equal, it will not matter what voltage it is using, 6 or 12, no difference. If the switch was hooked to ground instead of the starter terminal on the starter motor, it will smoke it is a dead short. If the starter motor is shorted, jambed, or the bushings are worn and allowing the armature to drag on the field poles, it will melt the switch. Use a starter draw meter (cheap at the car store) to check amps. If the needle pegs over 600 the starter needs service. JimN
