Cowman is on to a possibility. To check the valves, check the installed height there is about a quarter inch difference. The manual will show the distance. Another check to make is the advance springs in the distributor. if they are weak or broken, the timing will be wrong at running speeds but seem correct at static timing! Another check is for vacuum leaks. use a propane torch with the burner taken off to provide fuel all around the intake manifold, (even into the intake air) to see if it changes the idle. If it does, it locates air leaks. JimN
