Your D-179 was built at IH's factory in Neuss, Germany. That basic design was used in many U.S. built IH tractors as well as British built models like your 484. The two most common versions here in the U.S. are the 3.875" bore x 4.375" stroke version, which was avalible as a 155 ci 3-cylinder, 206 ci 4 cylinder, or a 310 ci 6 cylinder, and the 3.875"x5.062", which was avalible as a 179 ci 3 cylinder, 239 ci 4 cylinder, or a 358 ci 6 cylinder. Parts are readily avalible from salvage yards and Case-IH dealers. Your crank will need to come from another 179, but the rod can come from any of the 5.062" stroke engines, as long as it is stamped with the same part number as yours. I would definetly go rebuild on this one. You don't know what you're getting with a take-out. These engines had wet sleeves, the sealing rings rot out with age and allow coolant to dump into the oil pan. The early versions had lower compression pistons and start hard, you wouldn't be happy if you ended up with one of those. Go to your nearest Case-IH dealer and ask the SERVICE MANAGER (NOT the parts guy, unless he's been around long enough to know his stuff, but I guess the same could be said for some service managers) what pistons you should use for best starting. Make sure the valves and seats don't get ground to the point where they set into the head deeper than spec, or you'll have hard starting issues, if in doubt replace the valves. A brand new engine will probably be out of the question as they went out of production about 10-12 years ago.
