There are shims in there, Scott. You'll find them in about any set-up involving beveled gears.
My I&T manual shows a seal in a bearing cage, with a felt washer outside that. They don't show a gasket, but then they skip a lot of parts and, in that regard, aren't as detailed as the parts manual for a given tractor. A paper gasket on the very outside might make sense but isn't a given. Terry says they have one, so that's a starting point. If there is supposed to be one, I wouldn't be surprised to find Case IH still carries it.
Maybe somebody with an H parts manual can look it up and chime in.
