After looking at my manual, it seems that the only way to remove the shaft is toward the front of the housing. On the rear of the shaft is a bevel gear that apparently will only come out the front. Manual shows that the shaft moves forward, and then the rear ( bevel gears ) tilt upward, and then the gears can be guided backwards and upwards out of the case. It's not clear from the pictures, but there seems to be a ring which fits into the rear case and is probably galded to the case, probably will take some hard whacks with a soft hammer and maybe a drift to get the assembly moving. No need I'm sure to warn about the use of steel tools and heavy hammers on cast housings. The ring I'm talking about is fitted into the case pretty much like a bearing race and will be an extremely close fit.
