As Old says--is gas getting to the engine? When it is running, squirt some oil on the intake manifold/ head joint to see if the engine speed varies. Could be a manifold gasket leak. Second thing to check is the rotor position in relation to spark plug wire contacts inside the distributor cap. Our A with a mag acted a lot like yours, & it turned out that the timing gears on the rotor were off by 2 teeth. If nothing else fixes the problem, might be worth a look.
