O.K. here we go again. The original setup on 39 & 40s, maybe latter, had the sediment bowl on the small tank and shutoff valve on the large main tank.
The the set up was reversed sometime (I have not been able to ascertain an exact date) with the sediment bowl on the main tank (at that time the bowl opening location was moved back on the big main tank from its previous forward location) and the shutoff valve put on the starting tank. I have original owners manuals showing both setups
The sediment bowls are, if memory serves me right, also different, with the one side port on the opposite side of the main body. Makes sense if you think about it.
Reasons for the change are speculative, some believe too many bowls were broken by the aux drive belts, personally I think that when Farmall figured out that gas setup was going to be the primary requested arrangement demanded by farmers, it just made sense to them to put the bowl/filter on the main big tank. There also appears to be an undocumented, least I found it somewhere once, "field conversion" package to switch over the older units to straight gas operation. This would have included the single (possibally new dual bowl), and a new fuel line that ran straight from the bowl to the carb.
If you have the 55210-D bowl you have the one for the early setup. If you don't want to use it, prefer to adapt to the newer arrangement give me a shout, I need another older style bowl.
