I've had a '40 H since the mid '80s, always used 30W, never had any problems. I live in Iowa, and the only thing you notice is that at -20, its a little stiff to start, but I always warm a tractor before using it.
If you follow IH suggestions, they claim that during the winter, use a lighter weight such as 20W, or a multi-grade like 10W30.
