Red, I think you have already diagnosed the problem. My guess is that the engine isn't getting enough gas. It will start and run, but is starving for gas under any load. You might want to try using a small auxiliary gas tank feeding directly into the carb to confirm before you flush the tank or look elsewhere. This is also consistent with being able to drive it a few feet. The carb float chamber can fill if the engine is idling and you can get full power for a few seconds. Then the fuel pump can't keep up and it dies.
