I think you and MikeH hit the problem on the head. I've run into the same thing - fresh gas slowly dissolving varnish/crud in old gas tank, line and pump and messing up the carb. Verify by running with a temporary gravity fed tank (borrow the tank off your riding mower or something...) If that's indeed the problem, figure on removing and steaming/caustic washing the gas tank. Also figure on cleaning or replacing the fuel line and pump - they're probably loaded with green stuff.
