Your TA sounds to be completely shot. That will require splitting the tractor, twice. You need to split at the bell housing/clutch area and again split the middle section away from the transmission/rearend.
A rebuilt TA unit is anywhere from $400 to $600 plus core charge. While you have it apart you will also want to put in a new TA clutch, and probably main clutch as well so you don't have to go back in there for a long, long time.
Yes, the TA can be used constantly - the main things that make a TA go out are: rolling backwards while in gear, freewheeling while the TA is in low range, and shifting the TA too slowly.
