Each gear has a certain amount of running clearance. In fifth, the only gears in the drice train are the ring and pinion, the differential spider and side gears, and the pinion and bull gears. (fifth is direct through the tranny) As each lower gear is engaged, the additional running clearance of that gear set, and the constant mesh gear set are added to the path. As each gear has about the same clearance, the total remains about the same. But each lower gear has more rotation to move the parts through the same clearance so the total backlash (whrat it is called) seems to grow as you place it in lower gears.
