Agree the owner might think he's got a gem and want about 10 times what the hulk is worth. If you really, really, really, really LOVE this kind of work, and can get the old bucket for a few hundred, you'll probably have some fun, esp. when you get it running. All these tractors (M and the -6 series) are kinda charming (smooth-running and fairly comfortable considering when they were made--compare them to the F-series and 10-20/15-30 types that preceded them; my spine is probably six inches shorter than it should be after spending 15 or 20 years bouncing around on the old stuff when I was younger). But after spending most of my life thinking I had to save money by fixing everything I could by myself, I have finally gotten off this kick and decided that if I want a nice tractor, I'll pay the going price for a good one or even a beautifully-restored one and drive it instead of banging my knuckles on wrenches and cold, cold iron. I know a guy who has a whole farm yard FULL of restored machines that he has spent years on and loves to display. I admire him, as I admire anybody who has the knowledge and takes pleasure in turning out something beautiful. Go to it, but just be aware that you are going to spent a lot on parts, and maybe also on expensive work done by machines shops. Keep us informed. It'll be fun to follow your progress if you go for it.
