Hi Gerard, I believe you said it was a BD144 Diesel engine? Those engines are very hardy. Re again if it a diesel the starter requires manual depressing of the lever at the bottom of the dash to engage the starter drive in the flywheel. If it dosen't have the lever then someone has replaced the starter with a newer model from a 434 or later. Without the lever depressed the starter motor should just spin freely. As someone else mentioned make sure the starter drive is not stuck in the flywheel. I would pull the glow plugs(record how they are wired in series) and squirt your favourite penetrating oil or GM ATF into the cylinders and let sit for a few days. Still with glow plugs removed, attempted to turn engine by either bumping starter or pipe wrench with 3ft of pipe on handle of wrench. Make sure transmission is in neutral.
