If I remember correctly, the weights are made from laminated steel plates and are precisely matched. I also think there are four weights as opposed to two. The vertical linkage uses Heim joints. Can't remember what is special about the horizontal linkage and housing.
The high price is due to the fact that the M&W governor is being reproduced by another company. Ten years ago that governor was being sold for $400. Back when I had more cash than brains, I bought one. I don't think it made any difference but then I am not a farmer.
