The labeling is the confusing part. A 6v coil and a 12 external resister are the same thing. The explaination you are leaving out is that the points don;t like 12v, It causes arcing and early point failure. Points work best at 6 volts, 12 volt systems generally use a step down (ceramic) resister to lower it to 6volts. This works out good, in that they can sidstep the resister to feed 12v to the coil during the start mode for a hotter spark, the drop back to 6 volts for the run phase. (so you don;t burn up the points) internal resister coils can not do this. Even though you run 12volts in they step it down internally and run 6 volts in all the time and therefore do not start as easily.
