I have had some of the three piece oil rings that gave me problems. So on some we installed the piston without rings, pushed it up as high above the block as it would go, stuck a screwdriver in the wrist pin hole to keep it from dropping, and installed rings above the block. Then compressed and tapped down into the sleeve. I have a lot of luck with installing the single piece oil ring from below, but that durn three piece one has let me down a time or two. Now, replacing a valve from below, i have heard of that before, and it does work. We even replaced a broken skirt piston and honed the cylinder from below on a 22-36, but we did pull the pan.
