Depending on how worn it is, I start witha 260 or so grit and finish it off with a 400, then 600 grit piece. Just take it down to where the gear marks dissapear, maybe more if it looks like their might be a sealing problem where the gasket goes. Make sure your gear to cover clearence is right, think .003 - .008 or so. I like .004 with the thick gasket and hi tack sealer. You may need to hoen the gear face of the non driven gear a bit if it shows circular groovs. Most of those plates are pretty warped and it takes a good bit of time measuring and honing to get it right.
