Grandad had an MD that one time, for no apparent reason, had the big cap on the steering gearbox on the front come loose and fall out. Over the course of time (too many turns?) the worm gear and that part of the steering shaft eventually turned itself out far enough that the coupling separated there by the guages and then I was steering air-- luckily I was raking hay in 3rd gear when it happened and got stopped without a problem. In later years I have about killed my self trying to get H and M steering shafts apart at that joint, but I never forgot the one that came apart on its own.
