240U owner, Hal & Migraine,
I think the easiest way if he doesn't want to rebuild his block is to look for a 140 or 240 engine, either one should bolt right up.
The issue with the 340 block, I believe is more to do with the back end of the tractor being from the Super H/300/350 line which has a different bellhousing than the Super C/200/230/240/404 line. I'm not aware of any block differences between the Utility/Row crop versions (understanding that the 330/340 are hybrid versions to start with, their blocks definately different than the 300/350's).
The guy with the extra 340 block needs to look for a 330 or 340, poss a 504? And as has been mentioned before, the A/B is not a good idea as they don't have a mount for the hyd pump; the C/Super A/Super C/100/200/130/230 while possible, is not an easy bolt in swap because of the differences up front in the accy's and the radiator connections.
