Sounds like you have a cut-out and not a regulator. Chances are that what itis as they didnt go to regulators untill later but how do you know whats been changed over the yrs. If you take it off the generator there will be a DELCO REMY parts # on the bottom. Your generator probably has the third brush adjustable for charging rate.
