I've found it helpful to make a mark of some sort up at the front of the engine to save crawling under the tractor to get to TDC each time. Crawl under and line up the timing marks as Bob says. Then use a marker and make a line on the back side of the belt pulley and one to match it on the timing cover. If you can't or don't want to mark the tractor, get some tape to stick on and make the marks on the tape. You'll still have to make sure you're at the top on compression, but it'll save having to dive under the tractor sebbenty-lebben times to line it up.
