This is an "A" circuit generator.
You polarize it BEFORE startup by jumpering "BATT" and "GEN" (ARM", if so labeled).
The Ammeter SHOULD show discharge while you are doing this.
Then you START the engine. If NO charge, you can try "full-fielding" the generator by grounding it's "F" terminal. This eliminates the field resistor/switch or voltage regulator from the circuit, and should make it charge as much as it is capable of, putting the Ammeter well over into the "CHARGE" area.
