What's to test? You've "let the smoke out" of the Pertronix unit, and there's not much YOU can do about that, cause it's pretty tough to put it back in!.
The Pertronix Ignitor units can only carry a limited amount of primary current, about the same as points.
If the primary resistance of the coil is too low, and no ballast resistor was used, that would explain the problem.
On the other hand, I've used LOTS of the Pertronix units over the years, and every now and then, one just takes a crap, for the heck of it.
