A 504 did not have an ammeter from factory. If you put one on it, then yes thehot wire from the alt should go to the ammeter and from the other post on the ammeter to the batt terminal of the solenoid. If no ammeter, run wire from bat term of alt to bat term of solenoid. As for the idiot light, search the archives for wiring diagrams, the idiot light takes the place of the diode shown in most of these diagrams (I am assuming you are using a Delco internal regulator alternator).
