1.5 to 2 thousandths, and oil film will make compression. It is not good, but that still allows it to happen. A set of rings that are entirely carboned into the groove, with nothing sticking out, and wear on the side of the piston will still run with SMOKE. Wierd does happen::: A fireman was moving the tanker firetruck out of the bay in a northern Indiana rural volunteer department. (making room for the womens auxillary to have a meeting) The truck was a old White six cylinder gas fueled tractor and 7500 tanker trailer. He got in the truck and set the choke, stepped on the gas pedal, and it went to the floor. He figured the linkage came off so he started the truck anyway. It had a nice high idle and so he eased it out of the bay into the gravel drive. He shut it off and shut the O/H door. ANother Fireman came up about then to help with the truck because it was not running, or runable, he was going to pull it out with another truck! He was way suprised to see the tanker outside and asked how it got there. Well the carb had been taken off of the manifold and a red mechanics rag had been stuck down the hole tightly. The fuel line had a pencil stuck into the flair fitting. The pencil and fuel line had a seam/crack that allowed the fuel pump to pee gasoline in a tiny stream smaller than a medium paperclip wire directly on the rag. It ran very well. Though if the pencil would have come out, it might have burned the fire department down. JimN
