I'm not one that should give advice - but I just dealt with the same issue this afternoon using advice below from this forum. Good results so far. JimN posted this a few days ago: Simple and effective packing (if the needle is smooth) is Teflon tape twisted into a rope and wound around the shaft. Approximately the same amount of material is needed to make sure the packing is not too small allowing the packing nut to screw in all the way to thread bind. If too much is put in, the packing nut will not find threads to start on the needle base. Do not over tighten when assembling, the Teflon can be squeezed out the packing nut gap. This method takes less tension than the stock packing rope. Thin packing rope/twine is available at good plumbing supply houses as well. JimN
