Steel shifter knob signifies it was made during world war 2. Due to rubber rationing, steel had to be used. My brother has a 1943 M, it has steel shifter knob too. Not all Hs and Ms made during the war had steel shifter knobs though, I have an H that was made in March of 1942, it has a rubber knob. I believe that the factory switched to steel later in 1942 or 1943 once war production was in full swing and rubber rationing started.
