The design is such that the pump impeller shaft has only a torque load on it, no radial load. There is a separate mounting for the bearings that take the radial load, allowing them to be greased without any chance of water getting into the bearings. The grease seals are not exposed to the coolant. Modern water pumps usually have sealed bearings mounted on the pump impeller shaft. After a while the seals fail and then the bearings get water in there and also fail. How many automotive water pumps do you know that lasted 60 years like the one on your H???
