You asked almost all the same questions I have about restoring my 1953 Super C.I can't tell you how much I have rung my hands over this same thing.Mine has a 12 volt alt. on it and a 6 volt started and fires off like a space shuttle engine.After reading Jon's advice I'm not going to change it, It runs great so why mess with it.The only folks that will critize it would find something else if I change It anyway.Then I would be mad and have a tractor thats hard to start.Its easy to get caught up in makeing some judge happy but hey it's your machine,do your best and be proud of it.12v or 6v. I love the part about pole vaulting over mouse turds,cracked me up
