randy, the top gear is tapered when it drops on the bolster steering shaft. best way i found to remove the shaft, if you have a 2 or 3 jaw puller set it up on the top of the bolster. the jaws are gonna be too big to grab the outside of the gear, but you can catch the the feet on the outside of the bolster. snug the puller up so you put a little tension on the center, i back the nut out but dont remove it yet. take a hammer and hit the gear puller bolt, it should knock the shaft loose out of the gear. once loose, remove nut rest of way. carefull that shaft is heavy. you dont need much tension on the gear puller, just get er good and snug.
