I know the rims you're talking about and it might depend on what you have for wheels. Mine are cast, and the only place they bothered were when I set them as narrow as possible on my BN. That is to say, I mounted them on the inside of the wheel with the lugs on the rim to the outside, putting the air stem on the inside. In that case, the stem did hit up against the final drive on its way around.
I've got a pair of original rims to clean up and put on. For the meantime, I've kept the valve stems on the replacements to the inside, but mounted the rim on the outside of the wheel, which took care of the problem for now.
