Normally there isn't any oil in the final drive, only grease. The Oil from the tranny is kept back with an oilseal in the tranny. The bearing in the finaldrive is lubricated with grease, as you should notice a lubricationpoint in the "flange" you where referring to. The bullgear is mounted right onto the axle, so it's probably just came lose.. Open up the tranny and you'll probably see the problem right away.. Besides, you'll have to open up the tranny anyways if you want to replace the oil seal...
