The top transmission shaft and the pilot bearing in an M was always a weak point.It was not uncommon to snap off the end where the shaft was drilled for the bolt thats holds the pilot bearing. IH tryed to fix this on the late M's by using a snap ring to hold the bearing instead of drilling the shaft. The M&W 9 spds were very common in my area,I would say most of the M's had a Charlyn Power steering and a M&W 9 spd and they worked well and lasted well.Three of the M's and the H I have all have the 9spd and they have been trouble free.
