No embarrassment Larry! I had a similar problem when the nut unscrewed and dropped off the camshaft on my Super M. The cam gear then flopping around loose inside the timing cover beat the $)#*@ out of the threads on the end of the camshaft. Could not even get the nut started back onto it.
However couple of quality hours with a triangular jeweler's file and some patience I was able to clean up the mangled threads sufficiently get the nut to thread back on.
Depending on how bad the threads are beat you may be able to do the same to your pivot shaft...
