I think this is one that you can remove the shifter and top cover off the top of the tranny and inspect the gears. In fact you can see some of the gears by removing the large bullplug where you fill the hytran. Maybe stick a swivel mirror in there and use a flashlight. I believe the 4th gear is a larger one towards the rear. I can't tell from the drawing but one shaft has a sliding gear that works for both 4th & 5th. If you have 5th then it is not that gear.
If you have any metal chips laying around in the bottom of the tranny, you may want to change your fluid to keep any metal pieces out of the hydraulics. To properly check the tranny, you probably have to drain it anyway. Then run a magnet around the bottom to get any loose metal.
