I had a very similar problem with my w-6 about 2 years ago. I even went so far as to change the manifold! It wasnt the manifold, and I had the carb apart about a half dozen times too. It was crap in the tank... steam it out at a rad shop or empty and take it to a car wash and spend 20$ on it! The crud can settle onto the port and when you choke it, it causes the fuel to surge back and it frees it up temporarily, only to clog soon thereafter! Also check your floats for holes or for rubbing the side of the bowl. Other suggestions here are good too. I also had fuel coming out of the carb drain... it was not in enough qty to run it proper,it has gotta really gush out! That may be why it speeds up before it dies. Let me know if this fixes it. Good luck.
