Add to that the years of hard wear in one or two gears (think forty years of cultivatin' a quarter-section farm), and you'll have noise from the coastin' sides of those gears, whether you're coastin' against them or just runnin' light.
Jim is spot on about the pitting likely not contributin' to the problem, as long as it isn't severe enough to change the gear profile.
It might help to think of the noise as a little celebration of all the work the tractor has done, kinda like a tied-up dog or a penned-up horse kickin' up their heels when they get to run loose.
