Kickback happens cuz the plug fires toooooooooo soon i.e. BEFORE the piston reaches TDC soooooo YES it can happen regardless if a Mag (its start/impulse timing) or a Coil/Distributior ignition is start timed too fast before TDC. On Mags I set em so she snaps right at TDC while on a coil ignition its when the plug fires (well DUH) which is just when the points break open. If you retard the distributors timing and have the No 1 cyliner dead on TDC and then slowlyyyyyyyy advance the distributor timing n stop just when the No 1 plug fires youre close. You just dont want her to fire any BEFORE TDC cuz thats kickback city....
