Rob: Your one up on me, I didn't spend 15 minutes with the file. I installed the starter with the clutch drive. I think it was 1992 and the tractor has been starting winter and summer ever since. I even split the tractor since to install a new clutch assembly, didn't bother changing the ring gear. I think it will last longer than just a little while.
The clutch drive will engage much more smoothly, a big factor if you have or may be converting to 12 volt. Good to hear, you have it starting.
