I ran one of those for a couple years and I overhauled a couple of the 800s. My opinion of that engine is that it never should have gone into production. Gutless wonder, a 466 would put it to shame and, it was very expensive to repair. We had the same problem with one. IH used soft metal for the lifters and just glued a hardened disk on the bottom for the cam to run against. What happened to ours was, the glue let go on a lifter and the disc fell off. In no time, the lifter was peened over and got stuck in the bore so the valve couldn't work. I hope that is not your problem. To replace a lifter. you will have to remove the engine from the tractor and then remove the crankshaft to get to the lifter. The happiest day in my life was when we updated and got rid of those engines.
