1. Shifting should take one second or less - any time you move the lever slowly you are SLIPPING A CLUTCH.
2. ADJUST the TA and clutch TO THE LETTER of the manual!
3. Do not try to brake with the TA, pulling the lever back allows the tractor roll forward as fast as it wants to. Too fast and the TA will explode (like going down a hill). This is called "free-wheeling."
4. Do not let the tractor roll backwards while in a forward gear or roll forward while in reverse, this lets the ramp and rollers "ratchet" past each other and wear. Same basic thing happens when "free-wheeling."
The TA has its own clutch, the clutch is engaged in high range or "direct." When you pull the lever back, you have low range and the TA clutch is disengaged and the throwout bearing is running (just like holding down the foot clutch). It is a bearing and is made to run, so using the tractor in low range for extended periods is just fine.
If you ever have trouble pulling the tractor out of gear or shifting gears in general, try pulling the TA lever back. If it shifts better, you need to adjust clutch and TA linkages.
