Looking in the transmission on my '50 model M I notice some wear in the main shaft where the sliding gear sits when in 3rd. Not surprising after 50+ years for the most popular plowing gear. Looks like it's 2 or 3 thou. deep in the splines. Also notice some "pound out" of the splines in the sliding gear which makes it have more play than 1st slider or 4th/5th slider.
How typical is this level of wear? Does this sound like 'normal' (all things considered) or is this 'excessive'? Do you think it would be common in few, some or most of these tractors? Is it at all common to find tractors that don't exhibit this type of wear?
Is it feasable or practical to build up main shaft splines? What type of heat treatment would the shaft have from the factory?
