The first couple tractors I did, I used yellow primer too. The reason is a light yellow primer will make the red paint reflect much better. You see, a grey primer will more coats of red paint than a yellow primer. Yellow primer would only need one or two for the red to stand out all pretty. The gray, because it does not reflect and actually darkens the look of the top red coat, will take 2 or 3 coats.
BUT... When working the farmalls and getting them dinged here and there... I found that the top coat of red would scratch much easier than the primer of course. And I would have yellow scratches on my tractor !
