That might be a good place to start . I just went into it like they were new gears for a race car . I know tight gears howl . That's why I'm confused with mine being set at .012 . That's the max for the backlash according to the IT book . Minimum is .008 . John M's reply makes a lot of sense to me about mine . Since the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the rear end but from the tranny area . I just have the gears meshing tighter on the main shaft and counter shaft . Since it's 61 years old and obviously wasn't taken care of well it's running with a different contact area now . Time will tell . I think I'm going to use it as is after I get a new rim till this fall . Good Luck ! ...Randy
