While I'm putting the Super M rear and tranny back together, would it be better to try and re-shim the ring and pinion for backlash and pattern, or would it be better to put the shims back as they came out? To recap, I'm putting new bearings throughout the transmission and rear.
Unfortunately I neglected to at least check the backlash before I went crazy and took everything apart. I don't think it was out of hand before, but I'd bet there's enough wear to at least make the backlash out of spec. But I also know they've worn in a pattern over the last couple of decades and maybe it's better to put them back as they are. Would a little extra backlash hurt if the pattern was fine? I need some help with this one!
I read Randy-IA's post below and see that he may be having issues after trying to re-set the ones on his. It making me stop and think about this one.
