Sounds like you took out the original guides. Later IH production and all replacement guides from IH were the shoulderless type you have in hand. The shoulderless design is pressed to a specific depth. My books are out in the shop, but maybe somebody with the books handy could look it up for you. A depth leaving 1" above the surface of the head is ringing a bell, but PLEASE don't go by that. It may be for another engine I was reading about.
