If you rap the nut sharply with a hammer and chisel it should spin right off. I don't remember the sequence for removing the shaft. I'm thinking you have to remove the pinion shafts & differential and go out the back. Way too much work. Get a dremil tool and dress it up in place. Yeah, I'd look for a flush plug. Can't help you on the direction of the splined piece. Every one is different. There must have been 50 companies making those drives and I never see 2 alike.
