Tractor serial number, and engine numbers do not match on all Farmalls. The M's have a nice spread between the numbers. D slater, and a couple more here can shed more light on this. My 1950 M with original engine has a 10,000 point spread between engine, and serial number of tractor. Some are more than that.
The serial number will also be on the right hand frame rail. It may be hard to find due to several coats of paint, or severe rust.
