Started my SA after an 8 month rebuild. Runs great but no charge on the ammeter meter. Needle moves to 2/3 amp discharge with ignition switch on. I search the archives and found the 5-step generator/regultor trouble shooting procedure. I was able to get the generator to charge by completing step 6; grounding the field post and jumping a wire from the VR BAT terminal to the GEN terminal. The gen started charging with 5 amps at full engine RPM. The charge rate fluxuated with engine RPM as it is suppose to. Drove around for a while with a good charging generator. But (there's always a but) after I shut the tractor off and restarted, the ammeter only showed a discharge again.
From what I read on previous posts, I think the VRs cutout relay is not closing for some reason and I may have to adjust the spring tension. Any advise?
6v positive ground system. Rebuilt gen. New regulator. Good grounds.
